Tip for the Month – From the Golf Pro – April 2012

This month we are going to talk about the proper take away.  The take away is defined as moving the club from the set up positions to waist high in the backswing.  The take away is very important in the golf swing because it is the first motion and it sets up the timing and tempo of the swing.  Take the club away low and slow and with the shoulders (not quick and jerky with the hands).  Keep the left arm straight and the club away from your body to create good leverage, while keeping your head still.  I try and imagine someone standing behind me and holding their right hand up to my right ear.  I’m trying to take the club away and not have my right ear touch their right hand.  This gets me turning and not sliding backwards off the ball.  When the club gets waist high the club shaft should point at the target and the toe of the club should point at the sky.  The take away motion is done with the shoulders and hips turning away from the target.  Practice this move and it will help your swing stay on plane and will increase your accuracy on the golf course.  If you have any questions please stop in the golf shop or stop us out on the range and show us your take away.  We’ll tell you if you are doing it correctly.
